Background of the Study
Medication adherence is a critical factor in managing chronic illnesses and ensuring the health and well-being of elderly patients. However, poor medication adherence remains a significant challenge, particularly among the elderly population, who often suffer from multiple chronic conditions requiring complex medication regimens. Family caregivers play an essential role in ensuring elderly patients adhere to their prescribed medications, but their knowledge and understanding of the importance of medication adherence are often limited (Chika & Fatimah, 2023). In Bauchi State, where the elderly population is growing, educating family caregivers on the importance of medication adherence may improve patient outcomes and reduce the burden on healthcare systems. This study aims to explore the impact of family caregivers’ education on elderly patients' medication adherence in Bauchi State, emphasizing the role caregivers play in supporting elderly patients' health.
Statement of the Problem
Non-adherence to prescribed medications is a major issue among elderly patients, which can lead to worsened health outcomes, increased hospitalizations, and a decreased quality of life. Family caregivers are often responsible for overseeing medication management, but their lack of proper education about medication adherence can contribute to non-adherence among elderly patients. In Bauchi State, there is limited research on how educating family caregivers affects medication adherence in elderly patients. This study seeks to address this gap by examining how caregiver education influences adherence to medication regimens.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of medication adherence among elderly patients in Bauchi State.
To evaluate the role of family caregivers’ education in improving medication adherence in elderly patients.
To recommend strategies for educating family caregivers to enhance elderly patients' medication adherence.
Research Questions
What is the level of medication adherence among elderly patients in Bauchi State?
How does family caregivers’ education impact medication adherence in elderly patients?
What strategies can be used to educate family caregivers to improve medication adherence among elderly patients?
Research Hypotheses
Family caregivers’ education is positively associated with improved medication adherence among elderly patients in Bauchi State.
Elderly patients with educated caregivers are more likely to experience better health outcomes due to improved medication adherence.
The lack of education among family caregivers is significantly linked to poor medication adherence in elderly patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on elderly patients and their family caregivers in Bauchi State. Limitations include the possibility of bias in self-reported medication adherence and variations in the level of caregiver education.
